Australian Capital Territory
The Major beneficiary of our fundraising goes to support the L’Arche Genesarat (see www.mycommunitydirectory.com.au/ Australian_Capital_Territory). L’Arche Genesaret is a Community of people with and without intellectual disability, sharing life in Community, belonging to an International Federation. We help build a community where people with and without disabilities experience a place of belonging and welcome. Each person is encouraged to discover and share their unique gifts and grow in love, self-giving and wholeness.
The ACT Commandery has raised over $250,000 for L’Arche in the ACT. We aim to assist the building of an independent community. Over the past few years we have provided:
- $6,000 – Bonds for two community houses to provide homes for six people
- $10,000 – Matched grant that enabled L’Arche to pay off two leased vehicles providing reliable transport for core members
- $5,000 – Furnished two new homes including washers, dryers, lounge sets, tables and chairs, cutlery, crockery, fridges, microwaves, rugs, pictures (everything except personal belongings and their own beds). We also bought beds for the live in assistants.
Every year the members of OLJ-ACT get together with our L’Arche friends (core members, staff, helpers) and have a friendly cricket match. Our friends always seem to win, and then we celebrate over a good old Aussie BBQ.
